Day 11 - Torino - Ciao Italy!

Today was mostly a travel day with a live Eurovision semi final thrown in just to add extra stress. Fortunately it all went pretty smoothly despite a late plane which I must say is due to Jo's excellent planning. We flew from Heathrow to Milan, then caught the fast train to Torino and walked with our wheeled bags to our Air bnb. We started at 5.30am and had to be at the venue for Eurovision at 8.30pm for a 9pm start so a very long day!

Our apartment was great, very large, central and comfortable. We found it hard to adjust to restaurants not opening until 8pm and also found it hard to find places for lunch or even groceries at first, but that had a lot to do with the quiet area we were in, and our Eurovision commitments.

After a small rest and change of clothes we caught the tram to Pala Alpitour, the Eurovision venue. We were a little concerned about the security but they were very efficient and we had time to buy some super expensive sandwiches for dinner.

Our seats were great and the performances all very good, with Norway and the Netherlands being standouts. While I appreciate the political aspects of voting for Ukraine, it just didn't do it for me. Caught a very packed tram home and fell asleep immediately!

Day 8 - England - Heartbreak

We rose bright and early to get to Badminton after hearing many horror stories about the traffic jams and parking. Fortunately the competitors pass allowed us to park really close to the action. I am sure that and our stupidly impractical yet fancy car made the officials think we were owners and more powerful than the plebs we actually are. We caught up with Bronte and gave Clifford a pep talk, then found our way to a great viewing spot. It was surprising not more people were there, but we soon realised most folk move between fences.  As an aside, Badminton food prices are the worst in the world. Someone tried to sell me a coffee for 6.50 POUNDS!! I snorted and walked away to a much cheaper, awful coffee for 4 pounds. A box of fish and chips was 15 pounds. We bought an ice cream for $8aud. Day 14 - Torino - The Mole and The Final

Very sadly this was out last live show for Eurovision, the jury show which takes place the night before the final. But before that we went to the National Museum of Cinema which is a good museum housed in an extraordinary building. The building started as a synagogue but even before completion it was too expensive and was finished by the city who have used it ever since. It has the most amazing dome you can travel to in a shaftless lift. Jo was a little scared, bless her. The exhibition was OK, a little messy but good. The signage was terrible and occasionally I found myself wandering hopelessly in the same area, desperate for an exit or a cafe. An all too common experience in Italy I have found. Back to the arena and very excited for the final. Sheldon sang the best we have heard, and it was a very strong final. It was a great atmosphere despite not being televised. (Last 2 not my photos)

Day 5 - England - Tha's Not an SUV

It was a good flight from Singapore to the UK, and I was able to get lots of sleep which was a relief. The fun began clearing immigration where it was like Disneyland - not the fun bits but the endless queueing parts. Finally escaped the airport and went to get the hire car only to find they did not order a car for us in an auto, despite us pre booking and paying. We wanted a little SUV because of Badminton, but were "upgraded" to a sporty Mercedes with about half an inch clearance. After much swearing we managed to lower the back seat so we could get the bags in and we're off. Jo continued to swear the whole time we had the car pretty much. We drove to a town nearby our air bnb which was both a blessing, as later we found the directions from Google would have put us on the Lane of Death (more later); and a delight as Wotten-Under-Edge was everything a small English village should be - pretty, friendly and full of interesting shops with great food.
